Almost Famous

Series: Fashion in Film

Featuring Pennie Lane in person!

The new millennium brought us many things–Y2K panic, chunky highlights, and teen pop overload to name a few–but it also gifted us with the ultimate throwback film: Cameron Crowe’s heartwarming, emotional, gotta-sing-along Almost Famous. Loosely based on his time as a teenage rock writer for Rolling Stone, we follow youngster William Miller (Patrick Fugit) on his tour across country with fictional band and their non-fiction bell-bottoms, widecollars, and mustaches galore. In the course of Miller’s adventures, we meet and fall in love with Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) and her iconic blue jeans, to-die-for jacket, crop tops, and Lennon glasses.

Based on a real person, more to the point, a real Portlander, the one and only Pennie Lane will be in attendance for our third edition of Fashion in Film, bringing along insider info, a rock photography tribute by her friend Roni Hoffman, and a special surprise. The Hollywood Theater will screen the Director’s Cut of the film for the first time in Oregon (now with more Led Zeppelin!) and we’ll also bask in 40 additional minutes of 1970’s fashion glory.

Almost Famous is the third installment of our Fashion in Film series curated by Eden Dawn, wardrobe stylist and Fashion Editor of Portland Monthly, and Marjorie Skinner, Managing Editor and fashion columnist for the Portland Mercury. Together the two make up the majority of fashion press for our fair city and have an intense catalog of inspirational films influencing their style.
