Animate It!

Published on March th, 2011

Animate It! is an assemblage of professional animators and student volunteers that present fun, educational, and affordable animation workshops for youth spanning ages 7 – 18.  Whether it’s stop motion, claymation, or direct animation, our highly kinetic programs empower and reward many kinds of learners.

@ Open Meadow
Beginning in winter 2012, the Hollywood Theatre began offering Animate It! at Open Meadow High School. Presently, this class meets Monday through Friday during regular school hours. Projects are enriched by class days devoted to screenings, readings, reflective journaling, and storyboarding. This course also includes a section devoted to sound and its role in animated productions. Watch samples of completed projects here.

@ PDX Pop Now!
In collaboration with PDX Pop Now! (one of Portland’s pre-eminent funnels highlighting up and coming music), we send animators into schools for direct animation workshops, in which youth draw on and etch patterns into film.  The resulting piece is projected behind local bands as they perform at an assembly for the participating students.

@ Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Home
This weekly crash course into animation gives inmates at JDH an opportunity to work in pairs to create their own stop motion shorts with a variety of props and backgrounds. Each participant is provided the opportunity to play director and animator during this 90 minute workshop. Watch samples of Animate It! projects here.

@ Sabin
Middle school students at Sabin’s after school program (SUN) learn the art of stop motion animation through an eight week course. Students design sets and story lines for their props and characters to create an object-based animation.

@ The Hollywood Theatre
One of our long-standing programs at the Hollywood Theatre, Animate It! teaches the basics of stop-motion animation through mediums such as clay, paper cut-outs, and 3D objects.  The two-day workshop is designed for youth ages 7-11 spanning both beginner and intermediate skill levels.
