Rebuilding Together and WD-40 Company Announce Winner of 2nd Annual Tradesperson of the Year Contest

PORTLAND OR – May 4, 2012 – Rebuilding Together announced Joel Hamberg, a Painter from Portland, OR who has done extensive pro bono work for the historic Hollywood Theatre in NE Portland, as the winner of the second annual Rebuilding Together Tradesperson of the Year™ contest. Rebuilding Together partnered with WD-40 Company, On the House with the Carey Brothers, ServiceMagic, HGTV and DIY Network, and Craftsman Tools, to find skilled tradespersons throughout the U.S. that gives back to their communities and add value to their industries.

The Rebuilding Together Tradesperson of the Year was chosen after a committee review of nomination essays, a personal interview, and online votes by the American public. Joel Hamberg is a community leader who uses his knowledge of and passion for painting and the trades to help people in need. Joel was nominated for the work he completed at historic Hollywood Theatre, donating more than $60,000 in materials and labor to restore the historic building. He also encouraged other tradespeople to contribute and has been instrumental in turning around the historic building and the entire organization it represents.

As the Grand Prize winner, Joel will receive a trip for two to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, $500 spending cash, tools and products courtesy of Sears and a selection of WD-40 brand products.

Juan and Lazaro are two lazy con-men living in Havana.  When people in the city suddenly start attacking each other, the government claims it’s the work of dissidents, but Juan discovers that it’s a violent zombie outbreak. Juan and Lazaro decide to forge a new business, and rent themselves out as a professional zombie killers. Joined by their estranged adult children, they start to get rid of the infected…at a reasonable price.  Juan of the Dead skillfully mixes hilarious comedy, social commentary, and zombie carnage. This is the first horror film ever produced in Cuba, and is the best zombie movie in years.

Starting with the hugely influential band The Gories in the 1980s, the bands of the garage scene are known for two things: an impeccable knowledge of the history of rock and roll and a raucous live show. It Came From Detroit documents the evolution of the scene from underground obscurity to an international trend. As bands such as the White Stripes, The Von Bondies, and the Electric Six started to develop a following overseas, journalists around the world started to hype Detroit as The Next Seattle. We discover how unexpected popularity impacts the musician’s lives as more bands sign to major labels, and find out what happens to the small group of friends when not everyone has the same opportunities.

Underneath the crumbling shell of Detroit there is a pulse, and a community of passionate musicians that dug back into the roots of rock and roll and made it relevant again.

Dani Leventhal’s videos are the result of a commitment to constantly recording her immediate world, carrying her camera with her every­where, often mounted on her bicycle. From this process she stitches images together in a loose essayistic or diaristic style—a montage that takes us on a journey, but with a destination that is anything but clear. The individual shots seem mundane, but together become hyperreal, giving fresh insight into a personal contemporary world. In the award-winning Draft 9, Leventhal cuts between skinned animals, well-fed pets, her grandfather’s Holocaust-tattooed arm, and her own romantic liaisons to create, in the words of critic Genevieve Yue, “something that is extraordinarily immediate, both fresh and painful, hard to watch and yet impossible not to watch.” In Show and Tell in the Land of Milk and Honey, Leventhal juxtaposes bucolic shots of farm life with tales of sexual harassment and sick chickens while living and working in Israel while in 9 Minutes of Kaunaus, she captures the fanta­sies of a wide-eyed boy whose older brother serves in the Israeli army.

While Dani is often tagged as a diary filmmaker, the works as a whole complicate that term so much that it becomes ultimately rather unhelpful for understanding her project. At times, her videos can recall the way that Nathaniel Dorsky’s films spin the majestic from the mundane. Like Dorsky, Leventhal seeks out images with singularity and weight, alive to the imme­diacy of the moment—a moment that will never return. —Chris Stults

In the interview Jobs talks about his pioneering days with Steve Wozniak, when they built a Blue Box and phoned the Pope; how they – “two guys who didn’t know much” — assembled the first Apple computer and went on to found the Apple company.  He talks frankly and sadly about his enforced departure from Apple and explains what he is doing at NeXT (which he would soon sell to Apple and whose software would then be at the heart of the first iMac’s operating system). Finally in spell-binding terms, he offers his vision of a digital future – a world of wonderful products created by artists and poets.

Here at Fleur de Lethal we exuberantly relish in not only nonsense-but the magic of the cinema and in particular,the combination of the two.  On May 19th we invite the whole family out for a day of nonsense, cinema and CANDY for a special “Sing Out” Matinee of “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory” at the dazzling Hollywood Theatre.

This 1971 classic starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka follows 5 lucky children as they are granted unprecedented access to the most eccentric candy factory in the world.  The tour quickly takes a turn as outrageous ( and hilarious) misfortunes befall the naughty children and their indulgent parents leaving Mr. Wonka to wonder are there any good children left in the world?

As with all Fleur de Lethal events the movie is only part of the event. We encourage you to dress up as a character OR your favorite candy and bring interactive props ( bubbles for fizzy lifting drinks?) to play along. The audience is welcome to sing, dance, boo and cheer as we follow our hero Charlie Bucket on his adventure of a lifetime, full of “pure imagination.”

The idea behind the “historic marquee revival” is to honor the Hollywood Theatre’s past while setting the stage for the future. The new neon, illuminated sign will be a sequel to other improvements and features that have recently appeared at the Hollywood. New auditorium seats and a new main screen and sound systems were recently installed.

“We’ve improved the inside and now we want to improve our face to the community as well,” says Doug Whyte, Hollywood Theatre Executive Director. “The existing marquee is over 30 years old and it’s falling apart. The new marquee really fits our identity well and will be a wonderful addition to the community.”

To design, fabricate and install the new marquee, the Theatre has begun a “Historic Marquee Revival” fundraising campaign. The goal is to raise $136,000 from individuals, foundations and corporate donors. The Meyer Memorial Trust has already pledged $25,000. “We hope people will support us as they have in the past,” says Whyte. “The Theatre is really taking off and starting to recapture its former glory as a cultural icon in Portland.”
