World premier of “Have You Ever Had a Beard?” –  a new movie featuring Calvin Johnson of K Records/Beat Happening.

In an intellectual title weight bout, raucous music writer Chris Estey goes toe to toe with cagey music maverick Calvin Johnson about beards and other mysteries of life.

“Have you ever had a beard?” is a study in contrasts, illuminating the lyric heavy songwriting of Calvin Johnson vs. the ebullient music journalism of Chris Estey. The film documents their first meeting ever, in which both men perform on the stage of a vintage 1910 theater, Columbia City – a Seattle theater that’s played host to everyone from Bessie Smith to Jimi Hendrix.

Standing at ground zero of a series of music movements from Rriot Grrls to Grunge, singer/songwriter Calvin Johnson and his label K Records, spawned a music scene unrivalled in the indie music world. Both raconteur and sensitive artist, Calvin’s deep baritone booms across a generation of inspired vinyl. Despite his history, this film documents Calvin performing his new work, singing solo as he spits literary bop prosody in the form of three songs.

In contrast, bearish Chris Estey, with his boisterous laughter and almost masochistic need to be irrepressibly self-confessional, reads stories from his life, each memory spurred by a song on his favorite album, “Phil Ochs’ Greatest Hits.” In parallel tangents, his life story unfurls from mobile homes to LA flops, all to the soundtrack of a Phil Ochs’ seminal album.

The movie will be playing for just one night only in Portland.  Calvin Johnson of K Records will be in attendance to perform a couple of songs as well as answer questions.

Also in attendance will be Directors Kathy Wolf and Pat Thomas. This project is their co-production movie debut; Kathy Wolf is an aspiring screenwriter best known as “chickalou66” via her YouTube animation clips utilizing found footage and stop motion animation. Thomas is an A&R consultant for Light in the Attic Records as well as the author of a forthcoming book on Fantagraphics.

Sunday, Feb. 26th at 3 p.m. – The Hollywood Theatre has a long and renown tradition of throwing Portland’s greatest Oscar parties.  This year we have combined forces with Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque to roll out our liveliest, loveliest and FREE-EST Oscar Party to date.

Hosted by Nico Bella and Ian Karmel (Portland’s Funniest Person), our party is just as much about our audience as it is the ceremony.  The audience will select best dressed/best themed costume and brave attendees can enter the” Statuette Roulette.”  If your name is drawn during a commercial break you will have 1 minute to deliver the acceptance speech you have been practicing for years.  Winners will be rewarded with treasures, treats, and movie passes from The Hollywood and Fleur de Lethal.

A 4 hour broadcast can lead to thirsty and hungry attendees so we have invited our favorite food carts ( including Pizza Al Ferruzza, Violetta and more!) to create a pop up “food court” for your enjoyment, and a special Oscar bar will also be pouring themed drinks for the day.

Laela Wilding, granddaughter of the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor, invites fellow Portlanders to a party to celebrate what would have been her grandmother’s 80th birthday for a special screening of the classic film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

The party and screening is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10+ to be made at the door. The proceeds of this event will support Cascade AIDS Project and Portland’s public arts-focused school, da Vinci Arts Middle School. These two non-profit organizations reflect what Ms. Taylor is best remembered as– a tireless AIDS activist and an artist who began her craft as a young child.

Elizabeth Taylor starred in more than 55 films during her career; she was most recognized and honored for her roles in National Velvet, A Place in the Sun, Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (a role for which she won one of her two Oscars). Cat on a Hot Tin Roof remains a true classic. Playing opposite Paul Newman and Burl Ives, Taylor shines with her sultry portrayal of Maggie the Cat, in Tennessee Williams’ story of greed in a Southern family.

In addition to her prolific acting career, Elizabeth Taylor was a leader in AIDS activism, including her founding role in the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and the establishment of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

“I look forward to celebrating my grandmother’s accomplishments and honoring her life with this very special screening. It is important to me to carry on her activism and to give back to the community in which I live,” states Wilding. “I encourage friends, film-fans, art-lovers and activists to join us in what I hope will become an annual event.”
