Energy efficiency is the buzz this spring at the Hollywood Theatre as we upgrade to LED lighting for our new historic-style marquee! These new special LED marquee bulbs will save us money and keep our carbon footprint lower, but they are more expensive. Sponsor Neil Kelly is helping us raise the extra $8,500 through a free offer that helps your home and pocketbook, and helps the theater raise funds at the same time.

“These new LED bulbs just hit the market, so it made absolute sense to aim for a few thousand more in funding to help us save on overall energy costs and replacement costs,” said Doug Whyte, Executive Director of the Hollywood Theatre. “When Neil Kelly came to us with this offer it was a natural fit. Not only can homeowners learn about energy use and get comfortable, but they can contribute to the theatre’s own efficiency efforts without spending a penny.”

Here’s how it works. If you apply for and schedule a free home energy audit through the popular Clean Energy Works Oregon program, Neil Kelly will donate $50 to the theatre. It’s that simple. If just 100 people sign up for energy audits, that’s $5,000 for the theater!

He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

Repressed Cinema: Fallguy

On Tuesday May 21st at 7:30 at the Hollywood Theatre, Repressed Cinema presents Fallguy (1962) plus vintage trailers, all on 35mm.

In this intense low budget b/w film noir from 1962, a teenager (Ed Dugan) trying to help an accident victim finds himself enmeshed in political corruption and racketeering and is charged with a murder he didn’t commit. On the run from the mob and a hitman named “The Indian”, the teen tries to unravel exactly who set him up. Do not miss the great jazz score, imitation Saul Bass title sequence and a hair-pulling catfight!

Before the feature there will be a cavalcade of early 60′s vintage 35mm trailers from the Phobos Film Archive. Curator Ian Sundahl will be in attendance to introduce the film.

Repressed Cinema is a monthly exhibition series at the Hollywood Theater showing vintage & contemporary films that are obscure, neglected and from the fringe. Curator Ian Sundahl has been collecting and compiling offbeat and bizarre films for over 20 years. Sundahl acted as archivist for the documentaries “American Stag” & “Bettie Page Reveals All”. He has been entertaining audiences with unusual film shows in Portland & San Francisco for the past several years.

Sci Fi TV: Epic Space Battle Part One

On Thursday May 23rd at 7:30pm, SCI FI TV presents a new sub series of TV events and movies: Epic Space Battles. Immediately in the wake of a certain blockbuster movie from 1977 concerning interstellar warfare, an armada of inspired imitations swarmed onto the small screen and into movie theaters.

The first was this epic tale of the human race’s final flight for survival from a relentless enemy bent on total annihilation. After a thousand year war with their alien robot adversaries, the human leaders of twelve space colonies who may have been our ancestors, fall for a Trojan Horse ploy where they believe peace is finally at hand when in fact, their military fleet has been lead into a devastating ambush and their defenseless home worlds have been utterly destroyed. The last remaining military commander manages to round up the survivors of this holocaust into whatever spaceships can still fly and the ragtag fugitive fleet flees into deep space, in search of a legendary, lost 13th colony far out in the Universe, known as Earth.

We are doing our best to re-create the original experience of this event, by presenting the show complete with a few 1970s commercial breaks AND a quick peak at the Egypt / Israeli peace talks that actually interrupted the show during its original airing.

So get ready for interplanetary dogfights, vector graphic targeting screens, alien lounge singers and a creepily cute cybernetic canine. By your command.

Dalton attempts to clean up the roadhouse, much to the chagrin of local businessman Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara). After getting mixed up with Wesley’s thugs, Dalton reaches out to his aging mentor Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) who rolls into town to help out. Things quickly go awry and Dalton finds himself, Garrett, and new love interest Dr. Elizabeth “Doc” Clay (Kelly Lynch) in serious danger as they try to take back the town from the corrupt bad guys.

She also sports a mean leather jacket…except when she’s naked…which is a lot. But for those foolish enough to try to put their hands on her, she also castrates men with an eel that lives in her vagina. Bullet-riddled mayhem, disco shootouts, mind-boggling dialogue, a mullet-headed cop who drives a tank, and so much more. All in full-throttle 80′s excess!

Pizza is like the entire food pyramid!

You asked, we listened, and The Pie Hole is now open for business! Portland’s own Atomic Pizza transformed one of our storefronts into a full-service pizza joint and is now serving meat, veggie, pepperoni and cheese pizza inside the Hollywood Theatre. No more scrambling to get dinner before heading to the movies because slices are cheap ($3-$4), served piping hot and pair oh-so-well with craft beer or soda pop.

ALSO (because all of this food talk has us thinking about food, delicious food!), we’re just going to dig in and tell you that we are still serving an amazing selection of popcorns, including freshly popped corn with REAL butter, locally-crafted caramel corn and the intriguingly-spiced Masala Pop. Round that out with mouth-watering ice cream from Portland’s own farm-to-cone Salt & Straw and a wide selection of candies, wines, teas and sodas and you’ve got yourself a date with some seriously satisfied taste-buds!
