Energy efficiency is the buzz this spring at the Hollywood Theatre as we upgrade to LED lighting for our new historic-style marquee! These new special LED marquee bulbs will save us money and keep our carbon footprint lower, but they are more expensive. Sponsor Neil Kelly is helping us raise the extra $8,500 through a free offer that helps your home and pocketbook, and helps the theater raise funds at the same time.

“These new LED bulbs just hit the market, so it made absolute sense to aim for a few thousand more in funding to help us save on overall energy costs and replacement costs,” said Doug Whyte, Executive Director of the Hollywood Theatre. “When Neil Kelly came to us with this offer it was a natural fit. Not only can homeowners learn about energy use and get comfortable, but they can contribute to the theatre’s own efficiency efforts without spending a penny.”

Here’s how it works. If you apply for and schedule a free home energy audit through the popular Clean Energy Works Oregon program, Neil Kelly will donate $50 to the theatre. It’s that simple. If just 100 people sign up for energy audits, that’s $5,000 for the theater!

All you need to do is use this link to apply for the free audit at the Clean Energy Works Oregon website. Using this link automatically fills in the Neil Kelly/Hollywood Theatre promotional code. If you don’t want to use the web, you can also call Neil Kelly at 503-288-7461 to request an audit and mention the Hollywood Theatre offer.

When you have your audit, Neil Kelly will conduct a walk-through and tests, and provide you with a report and recommendations about how to get the most for your energy dollar. The free energy audit is open to Portland homeowners of owner-occupied detached single family homes built prior to 1993. You will need to be an Oregon resident 18 years old or older.

With your help we can all be more energy-efficient!

Sunday afternoon showcases more of the fantastic visions that only animation can conjure. Here’s some of what you’ll see: An eskimo legend of two lost hunters who discover the realm of demon wolf spirits… A spunky tree frog who has to evade jungle snakes and alligators while looking for his next meal… Travel in a time machine that’s just slightly too small for comfort… A classic chess game with death, a woman with giant hair that fights back, a city populated with sentient Rubik’s Cubes — and more.

Stick around for something extra special in the final hour: our first ever “strange and sexy” film block. It’s a very peculiar romp through the wilds of psyche and sexuality that you won’t want to miss!

In this intense low budget b/w film noir from 1962, a teenager (Ed Dugan) trying to help an accident victim finds himself enmeshed in political corruption and racketeering and is charged with a murder he didn’t commit. On the run from the mob and a hitman named “The Indian”, the teen tries to unravel exactly who set him up. Do not miss the great jazz score, imitation Saul Bass title sequence and a hair-pulling catfight!

Before the feature there will be a cavalcade of early 60′s vintage 35mm trailers from the Phobos Film Archive. Curator Ian Sundahl will be in attendance to introduce the film.

Repressed Cinema is a monthly exhibition series at the Hollywood Theater showing vintage & contemporary films that are obscure, neglected and from the fringe. Curator Ian Sundahl has been collecting and compiling offbeat and bizarre films for over 20 years. Sundahl acted as archivist for the documentaries “American Stag” & “Bettie Page Reveals All”. He has been entertaining audiences with unusual film shows in Portland & San Francisco for the past several years.

The first was this epic tale of the human race’s final flight for survival from a relentless enemy bent on total annihilation. After a thousand year war with their alien robot adversaries, the human leaders of twelve space colonies who may have been our ancestors, fall for a Trojan Horse ploy where they believe peace is finally at hand when in fact, their military fleet has been lead into a devastating ambush and their defenseless home worlds have been utterly destroyed. The last remaining military commander manages to round up the survivors of this holocaust into whatever spaceships can still fly and the ragtag fugitive fleet flees into deep space, in search of a legendary, lost 13th colony far out in the Universe, known as Earth.

We are doing our best to re-create the original experience of this event, by presenting the show complete with a few 1970s commercial breaks AND a quick peak at the Egypt / Israeli peace talks that actually interrupted the show during its original airing.

So get ready for interplanetary dogfights, vector graphic targeting screens, alien lounge singers and a creepily cute cybernetic canine. By your command.

In 1991, a young musician named rehearses for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute concert for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. Struggling with the legacy of a man he barely knew, Jeff finds solace in a relationship with an enigmatic young woman working at the show. As they explore New York City, their adventures recall glimpses of Tim’s (Ben Rosenfield) own 60s heyday, as he drives cross-country with a girlfriend and finds himself on the verge of stardom. Leading up to the now-legendary show that launched Jeff’s own brilliant career, Greetings From Tim Buckley is a poignant mirror portrait of father and son, two of the most beloved singer-songwriters of their generations.

Opens Friday May 24th

Dalton lives like a loner, fights like a professional. And loves like there’s no tomorrow.

ROAD HOUSE stars Patrick Swayze as James Dalton, a professional “cooler” who comes to the small town of Dalton, Missouri to take over as head bouncer at the Double Deuce. Dalton attempts to clean up the roadhouse, much to the chagrin of local businessman Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara). After getting mixed up with Wesley’s thugs, Dalton reaches out to his aging mentor Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) who rolls into town to help out. Things quickly go awry and Dalton finds himself, Garrett, and new love interest Dr. Elizabeth “Doc” Clay (Kelly Lynch) in serious danger as they try to take back the town from the corrupt bad guys.

Directed by the aptly named Rowdy Herrington.
