On Saturday February 9th at 7:00pm, the Portland Black Film Festival is extremely proud to present a Michael Schultz Double Feature. The Last Dragon and Krush Groove with director Michael Schultz in attendance! Advance tickets are strongly recommended, and are available here.
The Last Dragon (1985) 35mm Print! In New York City, a young martial artist named Leroy Green (aka “Bruce Leroy”) has dreams of becoming a kung fu master like his idol Bruce Lee. Leroy goes on a quest to achieve the highest level of martial arts, those who reach it posses a mystical energy known as “The Glow”. On his journey to becoming the “Last Dragon”, Leroy must confront the evil Sho Nuff, the “Shogun of Harlem”, and rescue his love interest (played by singer Vanity)
Krush Groove (1985) Based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings, up-and-coming manager Russell Walker (based on Russell Simmons) has all the hottest acts on the record label, including Run-D.M.C., Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Kurtis Blow. When Run-D.M.C. has a hit record and Russell doesn’t have the money to press records, he borrows money from a street hustler. At the same time, Russell and Run are both competing for the heart of R&B singer Sheila E. And all the while, The Fat Boys are attempting to get noticed for their beatboxing and rhyming skills, and are excited to find that Sbarro serves up “all you can eat”. This is an absolute classic, and a snapshot of old school hip hop history.
The Portland Black Film Festival is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council
