In honor of Election Day on November 8, our monthly Cinema Classics series proudly presents one of cinema’s greatest political satires: Charlie Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR, presented in 35mm!
THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940): After serving in the Great War, a Jewish barber (Charlie Chaplin) spends years in an army hospital recovering from his wounds, unaware of the simultaneous rise of fascist dictator Adenoid Hynkel (also Chaplin) and his anti-Semitic policies. When the barber, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Hynkel, returns to his quiet neighborhood, he is stunned by the brutal changes and joins the beautiful Hannah (Paulette Goddard) and her neighbors in rebelling. Written and directed by Charlie Chaplin. His first sound film! Featuring one of the most stunning cinematic monologues of all time, more relevant today than ever.
