Starting our Fall Silent Film Series, the Columbia River Theatre Organ Society and the Hollywood Theatre present the 1920 German silent picture THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI.
Horror films were filmmaking standard-fare long before the current crop of slasher and vampire genres. Considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, it tells the story of an insane hypnotist (Dr. Caligari) who induces a sleepwalker to commit murders. The film features a dark and twisted visual style with themes of brutal and irrational authority, the contrast between insanity and sanity, and the subjective perception of reality.
Hollywood Organist Dean Lemire will accompany the film with his original score on the Beverly Ruth Nelson Wurlitzer Organ.
Guest passes accepted.
