A police sergeant is sent to a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, but the townsfolk claim she never existed. A conservative Christian, the sergeant observes the residents' frivolous sexual displays and increasingly strange pagan rituals, all performed under the guidance of Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee).
