The Big Sleep
is a 1946 film noir classic that reunited director Howard Hawks with stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogart plays private detective Philip Marlowe who is hired by the wealthy Sternwood family to investigate a blackmailer. While working the case he falls for the eldest daughter Vivian Rutledge (Bacall) which further complicates the case as it gets more mysterious and dangerous. In 1997,
The Big Sleep
was added to the National Film Registry for its cultural significance.
