Cascade Festival of African Films: '76

Inspired by true events, ’76 is a political thriller and a love story set against the backdrop of the attempted 1976 military coup against the government of General Murtala Mohammed.

Respected army officer Captain Joseph Dewa and his wife, Suzy, who is from a different ethnic group and whose family strongly disapproves of her marriage, are awaiting the arrival of their first child. Personal loyalties to family and the state are tested as the young officer gets unwillingly entangled in the attempted coup. Shot in 35mm, with a pulsing soundtrack of popular ’70s Nigerian and American music, and told from the dual perspectives of the officer and his wife, the film will transport viewers on a fast-paced adventure.
