Released to theaters in 1991 barely a year after Vanilla Ice's
inescapable hit single "Ice Ice Baby",
Cool as Ice
challenged viewers
to not only accept Vanilla Ice as an actor, but tolerate him for more
than three minutes.
Robert van Winkle AKA Vanilla Ice plays Johnny Van Owen, a
rapper-dancer-biker who rolls into a sleepy small town with his
neon-clad crew. With a bike in the repair shop, they stick around
while Johnny attempts to woo honor-roll high-school senior Kathy.
Soon, a bizarre subplot involving corrupt cops threatening Kathy's
family unfolds, but not before we get more scenes of Ice just cruising
(and cooling, and chilling) on his bike. Strangely frenetic scenes,
pointless montages, astoundingly bad attempts at comedy and even worse
attempts at acting make you wonder if this movie was intentionally
made so poorly that you're relieved to see Vanilla Ice on screen!
