Crash Course: The Films of Sofia Coppola

MMU Crash Courses offer a low-intensity way to explore a filmmaker or genre, in a friendly environment shared with fellow film lovers. Unlike our MMU seminars, these Crash Courses offer a more casual approach. There’s no formal lecture or discussion, but films are curated and presented by staff experts.

Ask a millennial or Gen Z cinephile to name a Coppola, and many will first say “Sofia.” Over the past two decades, Sofia Coppola has become known as a visionary filmmaker with a distinct, decidedly feminine style. However, her work remains as misunderstood as it is celebrated, often dismissed as “all style.” In this course, we will look at how Coppola’s aesthetic choices in fact deepen the substance of her work, establishing her as one of the most exciting filmmakers of her generation.
