For BLACK HISTORY MONTH, Re Run Theater presents: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE!
This was the first English-speaking science fiction series ever to feature a person of color in the lead. Commander Sisko runs a space station catering to every sort of interstellar traveler.
We are screening two of its most beloved standalone episodes: “Trials and Tribble-lations” which has the DS9 crew going back in time to mingle with the original 23rd Century STAR TREK players, and the very unique “Far Beyond the Stars,” which features the entire cast playing characters in 1950s New York, most of them working for a fledgling science fantasy magazine in an era where black and female writers had to hide their identities.
TV commercials showcasing the progress (and exploitation) of African Americans in the 1990s will play during the breaks.
