1991’s coming of age comedy D
ON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTERS'S DEAD
follows 17-year-olD Sue Ellen Crandell (played by the one and only Christina Applegate) as she gets stuck at home for the summer with her four younger siblings while their mother jets off to Australia leaving the whole gang with a crotchety elderly babysitter. Once the sitter suddenly dies, the kids are stranded with no cash, but a summer of freedom. Sue Ellen fakes her way into a high up job at a fashion company to get by. Beyond the timeless quotes the film provides (“I’m right on top of that Rose!”), revel in classic 90’s fashion (including a backyard runway show!), and discover how to fake it in the industry like a pro (plus some warm, fuzzy family stuff).
DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTERS'S DEAD is the latest in the year long Fashion in Film Series curated by Eden Dawn, wardrobe stylist and Fashion Editor of Portland Monthly, and Marjorie Skinner, Managing Editor and fashion columnist for the Portland Mercury. Together the two make up the majority of fashion press for our fair city and have an intense catalog of inspirational films influencing their style decisions.
