We know now that films based on video games are a terrible idea, but
Hollywood was still reeling from the disastrous Super Mario Bros. film
when Double Dragon hit theaters in late 1994, narrowly beating the
Street Fighter adaptation in a race to challenge audiences to sit
through a 90-minute movie based on a game that’s just an endless
series of punches and kicks.
Scott Wolf (you know, from Party of Five) and Mark Dacascos (you
know, from nearly every low-budget martial arts movie released in the
past 20 years) star as Billy and Jimmy Lee, brothers just trying to
get by in the post-apocalyptic “New Angeles” of the recent past,
specifically 2007. The evil Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick) is hunting for
the second half of a powerful medallion called the “Double Dragon”,
which is in the hands of the Lees’ guardian, Satori. Things heat up
quickly, and our heroes seek out the help of the Power Corps, an
unconvincingly powerful gang of rebels led by Marian (Alyssa Milano),
to protect the medallion while nearly ruining everyone’s film careers.
Decent action scenes, painful humor, awful special effects and bizarre
cameos keep Double Dragon from being boring, and a few beers plus a
constant crawl of hilarity from our guests will make sure you actually
have fun!
