East of Eden

Series: Cinema Classics

For our September Cinema Classics offering, we’re proud to present EAST OF EDEN in 35mm, in honor of director Elia Kazan’s birthday on September 7. The Sunday screening is free for Hollywood Theatre members!

Though controversial, Elia Kazan indisputably created some of the most unforgettable films in cinematic history.  Stanley Kubrick (the subject of this month’s Kubrick on Film series) called him “without question, the best director we have in America, capable of performing miracles with the actors he uses.” With EAST OF EDEN, Kazan introduced James Dean to the world.

EAST OF EDEN (1955): In this modern retelling of the Cain and Abel story, based on the John Steinbeck novel, Cal Trask (James Dean) is the son of a California farmer (Raymond Massey) who feels that his father cares only about his brother Aron (Richard Davalos). Embarking on a business venture in attempt to impress his father, Cal encounters his estranged mother (Jo Van Fleet), now the owner of a brothel, and tensions rise still further when Cal falls for Aron’s girlfriend Abra (Julie Harris).
