Re-Run Theater presents another thrilling installment of EPIC SPACE
BATTLES! A double feature of the final episode of Battlestar Galactica
(1979) PLUS a very special episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
(1980) guest starring Gary Coleman.
“There are those who believe that life here…began out there…”
After
the resounding success of Star Wars in 1977, audiences wanted more epic
space battles faster than George Lucas could produce a sequel. And at
the end of the 70s, a powerful new TV show creator named Glen A. Larson
was eager to capitalize on this trend. Although initially one of the
most successful science fiction TV shows yet produced, BATTLESTAR
GALACTICA’s ongoing saga of a ragtag fugitive fleet fleeing into deep
space in search of the lost colony called Earth, proved to be too
expensive for ABC and Universal to maintain. Thus, the show’s original
incarnation ended after only one season with this pulse pounding
episode: “The Hand of God”…The Galactica intercepts a cryptic message at
the edge of a remote star system only to discover their old enemy, the
relentless robot race of Cylons, waiting to ambush them.
“The year 1987 and NASA launches the last of America’s deep space probes…”
Then
Universal and Glen Larson resurrected the 1930s era space hero Buck
Rogers…a cliffhanger serial about an ace pilot from the 20th century
who’s frozen in suspended animation to wake up 500 years later…and
modernize it for the disco era. This particular episode “A Blast for
Buck”, guest starring child superstar of the time, GARY COLEMAN, is
basically a Best of ‘Clips episode’…as Buck’s memories are probed (and
thus old adventures re-visited) to unravel a riddle that appears to
threaten the lives of everyone on Earth.
With fine precision, we
at Re-Run have culled music videos and commercials specifically from
this two year period of time when the gritty, low lit 70s gave way to
the spandex wrapped, shiny bright 80s, to round out the program.
