Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Series: Cinema Classics

This is part of Feminist March 2023

For our March Cinema Classics screenings, we’re proud to present GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, a part of the Hollywood Theatre’s Feminist March programming.

Written by the incomparable Anita Loos, the first woman to become a female staff screenwriter in Hollywood, and based on her comic novel of the same name, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in this farce of two nightclub singers set loose onboard a Paris-bound luxury liner. Monroe and Russell show their gift for flawless comic timing in every scene – and their musical duets together, including “Two Little Girls From Little Rock” and “Bye Bye Baby,” are simply priceless.  Directed by Howard Hawks, this film is unique in his oeuvre for its rapt focus on female friendship and yearning, and is even more remarkable in its wholesale burlesquing of the ‘dominant’ sex.
