“WE MADE YOU!”
So. Stephen King, right? He's quite the author, and his contributions to both bestselling fiction and cinema are numerous and varied. But when one produces so much material, chances are the end result won't always be CARRIE or THE SHINING. Sometimes, you get MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.
This picture is based on a King short story called "Trucks." In "Trucks," we are told a compelling tale of diesel big rigs that come to life and are evil and out to get you. Such a unique premise proved worthy of studio attention, and King himself wrote the screenplay and directed. Add the inimitable Emilio Estevez, stir in a rockin' AC/DC soundtrack, and you've got a cinematic gem perfect for the Hecklevision screen.
MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE also features a pre-"Simpsons" Yeardley Smith and a minor role from Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad"'s Gus). King himself has been highly critical of this film, which ended up being his first and only directorial effort. He admits to being "coked out of his mind" during the whole production, which makes sense, really. After all, this is a film about a world full of electronics that come to life and are hellbent on murder.
It is full of some genuinely entertaining bits, however, and MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE remains a perfect example of unique forms of storytelling and action that one can only find in lowbrow cinema.
