Technology and Director of the Oregon State University Food Innovation
Center in Portland
Ever think about what it takes to get that “hot” new food product on
the retail shelf of your favorite grocery store? Ever dream of
developing a “super-food” that will be nutritious as well as good
tasting? Welcome to the world of Food Entrepreneurism which has taken
off in the Portland area as well as many metropolitan areas across the
U.S. Discover what is in the DNA of food entrepreneurs and what it
means to explore the world of food science, culinology, business,
marketing, consumer evaluation, and production management.
In this talk, food chemist Michael Morrissey will describe the
exciting scene of food entrepreneurism and why it is thriving in in
Portland and the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Morrissey will discuss what
it takes to be a successful food entrepreneur, current trends in the
marketplace, and give examples of how people blend the world of
science, the art of cooking, and good business sense to become food
entrepreneurs.
Dr. Michael Morrissey is a Professor in Food Science and Technology
and Director of the Oregon State University Food Innovation Center in
Portland. Dr. Morrissey has worked in product development and food
safety for over thirty years and has been an invited speaker on these
topics in several countries in Europe, South America and Asia. He is
an elected Fellow of the Institute of food Technologists and was
awarded the Briskey award for Faculty excellence at OSU. He lives in
NE Portland with his wife Pati and hangs out with his kids, Sara and
Tomás and friends sailing on the Columbia every chance he gets.
