Pioneers of African American Cinema

Series: Portland Black Film Festival

This special program is presented as part of the 2017 Portland Black Film Festival.

Feature presentation: THE BLOOD OF JESUS (1941), a digital restoration of Spencer Williams' masterpiece. When an atheist accidentally shoots his Baptist wife, she dies and goes to a crossroads, where the devil tries to lead her astray. The struggle for her soul is underscored by ethereal gospel songs alternated with "down-and-dirty" blues numbers. Plays with the short films DARKTOWN REVUE (1931) and HOT BISKITS (1931).

The 2017 Portland Black Film Festival is made possible through the generous support of the Fred W. Fields Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
