Re-Run Theater: Saturday Morning Sword And Planet

Saturday Morning Cartoons were a weekly ritual for American children dating back to the 1950s and continuing on well into the early 21st Century before cable networks and home video finally made the forum more or less obsolete.

Sword and Planet is a Science Fantasy sub genre combining Sword and Sorcery (CONAN being the most famous example) and elements of science fiction.  There is a world of magic and wizards and mystical beasts; warrior men and women roaming around a fantastical landscape, wielding magic swords, but there are also robots and spaceships and a pseudo scientific explanation for the fantasy elements.  Arguably, the format dates back to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Pellucidar and John Carter series.

The format finally caught up to the cartoon world most famously in the after school series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”…but BEFORE then, there were a slew of others that lead up to that show’s popularity.

We are playing episodes from three different series: THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN , where a man, a beast and a magical princess ride around through the iconic cities of a devastated Earth two thousand years in the future! BLACK STAR , which is the perfect bridge between “Thundarr” and “He Man” involving an Earth warrior stranded in another dimension battling a demonic overlord with one half of a magic sword that when mended makes its owner invincible.   And finally the classic animated version of FLASH GORDON , where the evil Ming the Merciless wages a totalitarian war on the various races of the rogue Planet Mongo, from lion people to the hawkmen of a floating city, in his quest for universal domination!

Throughout the show, we will play classic and bizarre Saturday morning ads from the 70s and 80s including a very early ad for He-Man!   PLUS!  Breakfast cereal will be provided to get the full Saturday Morning experience!
