Thank God It's Queer pays homage to Tennessee Williams and a bevy of legendary queer talent in the gorgeous, thrilling, high camp classic SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959)! Brilliantly adapted by Williams's friend and fellow gay revolutionary writer Gore Vidal, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER follows rich, aging socialite Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn) as she befriends lobotomy specialist Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift) and offers to pay for his hospital's new facilities—if only he'll protect the Venable name by cutting the shocking truth of Violet's son's death out of her sane niece Catherine's (Elizabeth Taylor) brain.
Released one year after CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, which neutered the motivations of its characters, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER was able to outwit the Production Code and stay true to Williams's original text by claiming to be a morality tale—making the film somehow more explicitly queer than the play, and showing us just what happened to Violet's son...and what Catherine saw that horrific day at the beach, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER.
