Adapted by Fassbinder from his own stage play, BITTER TEARS stars the inimitable Margit Carstensen as the narcissistic title character: a fashion designer who maintains a codependent relationship with her assistant Marlene (Irm Hermann) while falling for her cousin's visiting friend. Co-starring Hanna Schygulla and Katrin Shaacke, THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT employs lavish production design, camp sensibility, and masterful theatrical direction to showcase the powerhouse performances of its all-female cast and the queer relationships explored therein.
