The Cities in Cinema

Every fiction film is a documentary of the city in which it takes place, whether of that city's reality or of our ever-changing visions of it. Colin Marshall, host of the podcast Notebook on Cities and Culture and author of the forthcoming book "A Los Angeles Primer: Mastering the Stateless City", created the video essay series LOS ANGELES, THE CITY IN CINEMA to explore that most photographed city of all through the movies. In this talk, he presents not just new material on the many representations of Los Angeles in film (from BLADE RUNNER to SPEED to CRASH) but also PORTLAND, THE CITY IN CINEMA, an extended video essay on the fascinating roles this city, too, has played on screen.
