A woman (Ellen Burstyn) begins to notice dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior of her 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair). Meanwhile, a young priest (Jason Miller) begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. After his encounters with the young girl, the priest believes her to be possessed by a demon, and he contacts an elderly priest (Max Von Sydow) who realizes the need for a showdown with an old demonic enemy.
