The Garden

The Hollywood Theatre commemorates visionary queer filmmaker Derek Jarman and the 25th anniversary of his death with a new 2K restoration of THE GARDEN (1990).

Told nearly without dialogue and filmed at Jarman’s coastal home in Kent, the titular garden operates as a Garden of Gethsemane where a loving gay couple find their lives interrupted by the violence of homophobia. Featuring Jarman’s muse Tilda Swinton as a Madonna harassed by paparazzi, THE GARDEN is Jarman’s moving meditation on the antigay violence of the late ‘80s and the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, including Jarman's own diagnosis.
