He is regarded as one of the most versatile and powerful actors of early cinema, renowned for his characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted characters, and his groundbreaking artistry with makeup.

The 1925 film’s story is based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, published in 1910.

Directed by Rupert Julian, starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin. Original score created and performed by Martin Ellis on the Beverly Ruth Nelson Memorial Wurlitzer Organ.
