John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart) is a former San
Francisco police detective whose crippling acrophobia forces him to
retire. An old college friend asks him to look into his wife Madeleine
(Kim Novak). Madeleine, who believes she is the reincarnation of a woman
who died many years ago. After following Madeleine around the city for
several days and rescuing her from a failed suicide attempt, Scottie can
no longer keep his distance and becomes dangerously obsessed with
her...but is Madeleine who he thinks she is?
