Where the Darkness Has to Run

Where the Darkness Has to Run *World Premiere* { 60 MIN / UK } DIR: Yolanda Barker
In a culture that doesn’t value what it can't measure, spiritual Westerners often feel displaced. Many go to the spiritual metropolis of India to practice yoga, meditation, and find answers to life’s deep questions. The Western media has dismissed these people as deluded, damaged, escapist and brainwashed. But is it so black and white? Through three Western ex-pats living in India, “Where the Darkness has to Run” explores the motivations of people who leave their lives to embrace spirituality. Have they found the meaning of existence, or are they running away from a dark past? Is spirituality a calling, or a escape? | Director in Attendance | Website

Unravel { 14 MIN / UK } DIR: Meghna Gupta
Unravel follows the Western worlds least wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India, from sea to industrial interior. They get sent to Panipat, a sleepy town and the only place in the world that wants them, recycling them back into yarn. Reshma is a bright, inquisitive woman working in a textile recycling factory in small time India, who dreams of travelling the vast distances the clothes she handles have. While Reshma shows us how these garments get transformed, she and other women workers reflect on these clothes. Despite limited exposure to western culture, they construct a picture of how the West is, using both their imagination and the rumours that travel with the cast-off clothes.

Claudias { 12 MIN / USA } DIR: Teri Danielson & Sonia Halvorson
Between 1963 and 1985, the AAU basketball team sponsored by Claudia's Tavern dominated the elite Portland league. What was the secret to their success?
