Gio Arlotta's documentary about Zambian rock and roll legends WITCH.
WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and spearheaded a new genre dubbed Zamrock, taking influences that ranged from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath and James Brown and mixing them with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs. At the peak of their popularity, the band often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Jagari - whose name is an Africanization of Mick Jagger’s - riled up crowds by stage diving from balconies and dancing manically.
Jagari, the charismatic original lead singer of WITCH, will be onstage for a live Q&A after the movie. He led the band through their rocking period, leaving before they went disco. After his rock n roll life, Jagari spent years teaching and mining for gems until recently, when WITCH hit the road once more. Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear stories of the Zamrock scene from one of its most important pioneers.
WITCH will also be playing a full on rock n' roll show on June 19th at the Star Theater. This is part one of the Mississippi Records After The End Of the World Festival!
Jagari will be interviewed on stage by Wyrd War's ultimate authority on all things rock and roll, Dennis Dread.
