Portland Black Film Festival

This February, we're proud to present the 2017 Portland Black Film Festival, curated by the Portland writer/filmmaker David F. Walker and the Hollywood Theatre. The guest of honor this year will be screen legend Pam Grier, in attendance on Saturday, February 11!

The Portland Black Film Festival aims to offer diverse perspectives and stories in an art form all too often dominated by white filmmakers. This year’s festival features films which showcase the cinematic achievements of African American stars and filmmakers and examine the black experience in America.

The Festival is made possible through the generous support of:

Within Our Gates

Presented as part of the 2017 Portland Black Film Festival.

A digital restoration of this 1920 silent film from pioneering director Oscar Micheaux, with a new score composed by DJ Spooky. Kindly Sylvia Landry (Flo Clements) takes a fundraising trip to Boston in hopes of collecting $5,000 to keep a Southern school for impoverished black children open. She then meets the warmhearted Dr. Vivian (William Smith), who falls in love with Sylvia and travels with her back to the South. There, Dr. Vivian learns about Sylvia's shocking, tragic past and realizes that racism has changed her life forever.

I Am Not Your Negro

Presented as part of the 2017 Portland Black Film Festival.

In this incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book that writer James Baldwin never finished, about the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends – Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, and Martin Luther King Jr. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words (narrated by Samuel L. Jackson), and a flood of rich archival material. I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of the Black Lives Matter movement and challenges the very definition of what America stands for.
