In this four week class, we’ll watch films that both depict anti-fascism in action, and embody what it means to be anti-fascist cinema, in terms of how the ideology of the film expresses itself through form, style, and the means of its production.
Let’s turn our attention to the insight that this art form - and the artists who lived through periods of human beauty and brutality that have led up til now - can give us, as we seek to understand the fascism of the past & present so it cannot become the fascism of the future.
Films:
3/6: THE GREAT DICTATOR (1941, 125 min)
3/13: TBD
3/20: PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006, 119 min)
3/27: ZONE OF INTEREST (2023, 105 min)
This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Max Swanson, a filmmaker/performer, writer, educator, and organizer based in Portland, OR.
