What do an adventure fantasy, an arthouse gem, a crime thriller, and an early 2000’s mystery flick have in common? Something to say about the many spiritual practices of the African diaspora.
During this four-week journey through Haiti, New York, and Louisiana we’ll analyze the social, political, and cultural context of each film’s portrayal of Black spirituality. We’ll also discuss how Black femininity and sexuality intersect with stories centered on religious and magical practices.
