Citizen Ruth

Citizen Ruth

An Alexander Payne comedy, CITIZEN RUTH (1996, 106 min) follows Ruth (Laura Dern), a woman who’s slipped between society’s cracks, as she seeks her next can of paint to huff. When she finds out she’s pregnant, suddenly everyone wants a say in her choices. Featuring humorous appearances from character actors like Mary Kay Place, Kurtwood Smith, and Swoozie Kurtz, CITIZEN RUTH is a biting satire that’s become all the more relevant given the state of our media saturated society.

In this class we’ll explore the role of abortion in film, and discuss what happens when individuals are overlooked by the extreme ends of the political spectrum. Attendees will also have the chance to weigh in on the pros and cons of moon singing!

Class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.

This class will be taught by Pamela Pierce, Assistant Professor at OHSU, and author of Livin’ Like Jagger: The Hardcore Life of a Digitizing Librarian.

Class size will be limited to 18.
