Guy Maddin has been crafting delusional folktales for the last 40 years. Using silent-era film aesthetics, highlighting the absurd and the taboo, and imbuing a cunning humor into his work, he has garnered attention for being both wonderful and strange. His films paint pictures of forgotten worlds littered with forgetful people.
Throughout this course we will be viewing four of Maddin’s most pivotal films that mark different stylistic shifts in his career. We will observe how his format choices, budget increases, and using primarily nonstar actors to adding a sprinkle of notable players–amongst other factors–play important roles in how the formal qualities of his films have changed over the years.
MMU Crash Course classes offer a low-intensity way to explore a filmmaker or genre, in a friendly environment shared with fellow film lovers. Unlike our MMU seminars, Crash Courses offer a more casual approach. There’s no formal lecture or discussion, but films are curated and presented by staff experts.
