She’s Gotta Have It

She’s Gotta Have It

In this class, we’ll explore Spike Lee's groundbreaking 1986 debut feature film SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT (88 min). This pivotal work helped launch the American independent film movement and Lee's career. Through close analysis of this comedy-drama, and connecting it to broader traditions in Black storytelling and independent filmmaking, we'll examine how Lee crafts a revolutionary portrait of female sexuality, Black identity, and artistic expression in 1980s Brooklyn.

This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Kristina Mucker, whose analytical approach to her previous MMU courses,The Blackening, and Black Southern Gothic complement her passion for exploring Black filmmakers, psychological thrillers, and socially conscious cinema.

Class size will be limited to 18.
