Movie Magic: Witches in the Cinema

Movie Magic: Witches in the Cinema

Join us as we explore the ever-evolving portrayal of witches and witchcraft in cinema.  We’ll examine themes of power, persecution, and female autonomy through a diverse range of films.

In each class, we’ll analyze historical and cultural contexts, visual storytelling, and the role of magic in shaping narratives of fear, freedom, and folklore.

Films:

3/4: HAXAN (1922, 77 min)

3/11: PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998, 104 min)

3/18: HELLBENDER (2021, 86 min)

3/25: I AM NOT A WITCH (2017, 93 min)

This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Kia Anne Geraths, a filmmaker and educator. Her previous classes include the Cult Horror series, Intro to Varda, and John Sayles Retrospective.

Each class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.

Class size will be limited to 18.
