Neurotic 10-year-old Richard (Macaulay Culkin) is terrified of everything from tuna sandwiches to shin splints. One day, he gets caught in a storm and takes refuge in a library — only to be magically transported into an animated world, where he meets The Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd). With the help of his new friends—Adventure (Patrick Stewart), Fantasy (Whoopi Goldberg), and Horror (Frank Welker)—Richard must navigate encounters with classic literary characters to find his way back home.
