Douglas Sirk in Technicolor

WRITTEN ON THE WIND in 35mm

WRITTEN ON THE WIND in 35mm

The first of two unforgettable masterworks of the melodrama by director Douglas Sirk, presented in rare screenings on original 35mm dye-transfer Technicolor prints! Rock Hudson stars as the hapless Texas geologist working for his mega-rich oil baron best friend (Robert Stack, a perfectly soused playboy) and his hot-to-trot sister who can’t help having her own boozy misadventures (Dorothy Malone). Into this perpetual enabling of bad behavior steps the beguiling Lucy Moore (Lauren Bacall), and the tense, careful dynamic of the Hadley oil family clan begins to crack and squirt gushers.

Renowned for the deeply saturated color palette created by Sirk and his longtime cameraman, Russell Metty, Written on the Wind is rarely seen in the original Technicolor film process, and we have have acquired the two prints being shown through the generosity of a private collector.

Peter Conheim will host the event and director Todd Haynes (FAR FROM HEAVEN, CAROL, VELVET GOLDMINE) will introduce each screening.

Cinema Preservation Alliance is the project of Peter Conheim, a film and media archivist and restorationist living in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the many independent film preservations he has helmed, many of which may be viewed at byNWR.com, he is a musician and co-founder of groups Mono Pause and Wet Gate, plays with Malcolm Mooney (of CAN) and The Mutants, and was a primary member of the mixed-media group Negativland for 20 years.
