Veteran crook Max (Jean Gabin) has been sitting tight on a stash of stolen gold bars that he and his partner in crime, Henri, plan to retire on. However, rival gangsters begin to nose around, including the slick Angelo (Lino Ventura in his first screen performance), who has been making time with Henri's girl (Jeanne Moreau). Jacques Becker's signature crime thriller boasts wise-cracking dialogue and explosive action, and Gabin's masterful performance renders a portrait of aging masculinity and a nuanced portrayal of honor among thieves.
