Directed by Albert Maysles & David Maysles and Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer (but often credited solely to the Maysles), GREY GARDENS (1975) is the verité documentary that looked in on the lives of Jackie O's eccentric cousins and launched a cultural obsession. Meet "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, two society mavens who haven't left their dilapidated East Hampton estate for decades: they eat paté, sing showtunes, share space with kittens and raccoons, and wage wordy warfare with each other. GREY GARDENS made a legend out of philosopher and fashion icon Little Edie, who went on to enjoy newfound fame and fans after the passing of Big Edie and her ensuing escape from GREY GARDENS—inspiring not only this documentary but also a sequel, a dramatized film starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, a Broadway musical, and Jinkx Monsoon's legendary Snatch Game performance on RuPaul's Drag Race.
