At last! The Sun Ra Arkestra is playing Portland! Presented as a part of a two-night showcase in celebration of the "Monuments - The Earth Expedition Of Sun Ra" exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. Portland Art Museum and The Hollywood Theatre will each host an evening with completely unique sets, January 2nd and 3rd.
Led by founding member Marshall Allen (age 94), the band has lost none of its power over the years. Started in 1957, the Arkestra continues as a forward thinking big band, playing everything from Jazz to Space Chants to Soul to Avant-Garde and much much more. Fifteen members will be onstage with dancers, elaborate costumes and light shows and projections. This is a once in a lifetime event not to be missed! Celebrate the beginning of a new year with two shows by one of the greatest bands of all time.
