Hollywood Babylon presents a 35mm print of this pre-Code horror classic, regarded as the best movie version of the Robert Louis Stevenson story.
After his father-in-law, Brigadier-General Carew (Halliwell Hobbes), rejects the idea that he and his fiancee, Muriel Carew (Rose Hobart), should be married right away, Dr. Henry Jekyll (Frederic March)Â creates a potion to help bring about his darker side, Mr. Edward Hyde. Hyde embarks on a libido-driven spree of destruction and debauchery!
Directed brilliantly by Rouben Mamoulian and shot by cameraman Karl Struss, the scenes in which March transforms from Jekyll to Hyde are truly masterful. The secrets of the transformation scenes were not revealed for decades. For his two-faced characterization as Jekyll/Hyde, March won an Oscar for Best Actor for his outstanding performance. Also starring the fantastic Miriam Hopkins as the lovely bar singer, Ivy Pierson.
