Set in 1971, Autos, Mota and Rock ’n’ Roll follows Justino and “El Negro,” two friends whose idea to organize a simple car race and modest rock concert spirals into chaos—accidentally giving birth to Avándaro, the most outrageous (and fictionalized) music festival in Mexican history. Presented in a witty and irreverent mockumentary style, the film blends fictional interviews, archival footage, and Super 8 improvisation to hilariously reimagine a cultural turning point. With its music-infused satire, this film captures one of Mexico’s key cultural myths: Avándaro, the Mexican Woodstock. It balances nostalgia and critique in a way that aligns beautifully with our Festival’s focus on identity and artistic heritage.
The film was part of the Official Selection at the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) 2025, where Emiliano Zurita won the Best Performance Award for his role. In addition, the movie earned an impressive 13 nominations at the 67th Ariel Awards, one of Mexico’s most prestigious film honors.
