Celebrate the birthday of genius filmmaker Chantal Akerman (1950-2015) with a rare screening of her vibrant mall musical GOLDEN EIGHTIES. A true passion project, the film gestated over many years, with Akerman tirelessly pursuing financing to realize its bold, unconventional vision.
Reuniting Akerman with Delphine Seyrig a decade after their landmark collaboration Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, GOLDEN EIGHTIES unfolds in a candy-colored shopping mall where the romantic entanglements of employees and customers play out through stylized song-and-dance numbers.
Playful yet unmistakably Akerman, the film reimagines the musical through her singular lens, balancing exuberance with her signature attention to duration, repetition, and the rhythms of everyday life.
The film will be preceded by a short film by Franklin Film School students. Franklin Film School is a four year program within the Career Technology Education programming at Franklin High School. Franklin students have an opportunity to study filmmaking using state of art, industry standard equipment.
