LES BLANK CELEBRATION

LES BLANK CELEBRATION
Join us for the 12th annual LES BLANK CELEBRATION as we spotlight a documentary double feature focusing on the legacy of two extraordinary artists that were part of the Les Blank family.  Flaco Jimenez and Gerry (The Maestro) Gaxiola passed away in 2025, but their creative power lives on in Les Blank's  CHULAS FRONTERAS.and THE MAESTRO.

CHULAS FRONTERAS (1976) - 58 minutes
A complex, insightful look at the Chicano experience as mirrored in the lives and music of the most acclaimed Norteño musicians of the Texas-Mexican border, including Los Alegres de Teran, Flaco Jimenez, and Lydia Mendoza. Chulas Fronteras was selected by The Library Of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry list, of the 400 motion pictures to be preserved in perpetuity.

THE MAESTRO: KING OF THE COWBOY ARTISTS (1994) - 54 minutes
What happens when a dedicated husband and father quits his job, adopts the persona of a Western-Movie Singing Cowboy, takes on the entire art establishment, and refuses to accept money for his art?  Meet Gerry Gaxiola, AKA The Maestro, an ex-wage slave who gave up everything to make art for its own sake.

In his prolific 50-year career, award-winning filmmaker Les Blank (1935 - 2013) chronicled American life, exotic foods, eccentric artists, amazing musicians, garlic-lovers, and gap-toothed women.
Director: Les Blank
