The other film by Chantal Akerman in Sight & Sound's 100 Greatest Films of All Time, NEWS FROM HOME marries grand compositions of 1970s Manhattan that oscillate between ghostly and vibrant with letters detailing familial mundanity from the filmmaker's quietly pleading mother back in Brussels, read off-screen by Akerman. This portrait of alienation, with its beautiful cinematography by Babette Mangolte (Akerman's frequent collaborator) and densely layered sound design, demands to be experienced in the theater.
