THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE

THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE
THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE is the award-winning documentary of Barbara Dane, a groundbreaking folk singer whose unbending principles guided her through notoriety, obscurity, and finally, music legend.  The godmother of New York City’s early folk scene, Barbara encountered and shared the stage with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Count Basie, Lightnin’ Hopkins and many others.

An activist at heart who eschewed mainstream success in favor of fighting for civil rights, Dane emanated the people-powered connectivity of folk, the defiance of blues and the elemental cool of jazz that cut through commercial artifice and earned her a considerable FBI file.  Through the lens of a recent concert tour, this documentary examines an outspoken and tireless artist whose devotion to music and social justice showcases the spirit at the heart of American dissent.

“Barbara is someone who is willing to follow her conscience. She is, if the term must be used, a hero.” – Bob Dylan

“She’s always been a role model and a hero of mine – musically and politically,” - Bonnie Raitt

“Must see!” — Pam Grady, SF Chronicle
