Iconic Queer Ancestors: Derek Jarman

Tuesdays in January, starting January 10, at 6:30pm in the Movie Madness Miniplex

Cost: $75 ($60 members) for the four-class series

This iteration of our Iconic Queer Ancestors series puts the “icon” in “iconoclastic" with a series of films by the great thinker and maker Derek Jarman. A painter, filmmaker, gardener, gay rights/AIDS activist, and saint (as canonized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence), Jarman's brief and impactful career spanned 1971 to 1994. We’ll journey from his early short films and music video collaborations with some of Britain’s rising stars of the ’70s and ’80s (including the film debut of Tilda Swinton) to his transmutation of his HIV-positive diagnosis into powerful and political masterpieces, culminating with a screening of his last filmic testament, on his birthday, January 31. Join us and let the work of Saint Derek of Dungeness of the Order of Celluloid Knights remind us that our lives are themselves art, to be shaped by not shame, but joy.

For a complete list of titles that will be shown in this course, email education@moviemadness.org with “film titles” in the subject line.

This class will be taught by Max Swanson, a nonfiction/experimental filmmaker/performer, writer, educator, and organizer based in Portland, OR. They currently teach at NW Doc and PSU, and work as a freelance story consultant. They are also a co-producer of the local drag and art collaborative Max & Mars Present.

Movies will be screened at the Movie Madness Miniplex, followed by an instructor-led discussion. Classes will be held Tuesdays through January at 6:30pm, beginning January 10. Proof of vaccination is required for all students and instructors.

Tuition is $75 for the four-week class, $60 for Hollywood Theatre/Movie Madness members. Class size will be limited to 18.
