For many years, the Hollywood Theatre has been the hosting venue for the HP Lovecraft Film Festival. Like us here at the Hollywood, the curators of HPLFF recognize and condemn the reprehensible racist views the author held during his lifetime. The tension between Lovecraft's views and the genre he created is reflected in the Festival itself, which takes its name from Lovecraft but has focused on new voices and new stories in the cosmic horror genre, many from BIPOC creators, and has featured in-depth discussions of what fandom of this work means in the 21st century.

We have seen the festival's producers continually address the problematic aspects of Lovecraft's legacy and engage with the question of what it means to be a fan of work created by someone with blatantly bigoted ideas. We continue to grapple with how to celebrate a genre that contains many diverse and boundary-pushing works, and how to support a partner organization with a track record of engaging thoughtfully with these issues while not sidestepping or seeming to endorse Lovecraft's racism.
